Solidariteit met GVB werkers
On Sunday 20 of November, public-transport workers of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Hague went on a 24-hour strike.
The government decided to reduce the funding of public transport by 40%.
More than half of the employes currently working in pubic transport will be laid off.
At the same time, the service will be more expensive for the citizens and their quality dramatically worsen.
In Amsterdam, it is estimated that 40% of the public transport bus-lines, 20% of the tram-lines as well as 1 metro line will stop operating.
As Greek immigrants working or studying in the Netherlands, knowing the how’s and the why’s that brought us here, we felt the need to show our support and express our solidarity to the strikers.

Deze week heeft de Griekse bevolking herdacht met massale demonstraties dat 38 jaar geleden studenten aan de Technische Universiteit Athene in opstand kwamen tegen de militaire dictatuur. Vandaag, 38 jaar later strijdt de Griekse bevolking tegen een andere dictatuur: de dictatuur van de EU en het IMF.
Terwijl de Nederlandse media en politici herhaaldelijk verhalen vertellen over luie en corrupte Grieken die van hoge salarissen genieten en op hun 53e met pensioen gaan, lijden de gewone mensen in Griekenland onder extreme armoede, torenhoge belastingen, massale privatiseringen en repressie. Om ervoor te zorgen dat de Duitse, Franse en Nederlandse schuldeisers hun geld terugkrijgen met een woekerrente, zijn salarissen en pensioenen al met 40% omlaag gegaan, is de werkloosheid al tot 18% (40% voor jongeren) opgelopen, dreigen arme Grieken hun huizen te verliezen en worden publieke voorzieningen zoals openbaar vervoer, onderwijs en zorg als cadeautje gegeven aan de schuldeisers.
De Nederlandse regering probeert jullie te overtuigen dat de bezuiningen in Nederland noodzakelijk zijn zodat Nederland geen Griekenland wordt. Kabinet Rutte maar ook de meeste oppositiepartijen zeggen dat arbeiders, werklozen en studenten hun rechten moeten inleveren en meer zelf moeten betalen om het monster van de financiële markten te calmeren. De waarheid is dat Griekenland geen uitzondering is, maar een experiment voor heel Europa. Wat in Griekenland anderhalf jaar geleden begon, is nu ook begonnen in Italië, Portugal, Spanje, Ierland en zal straks ook in Nederland beginnen.
Zoals de laatste ontwikkelingen laten zien heeft zelfs democratie geen plaats meer in Europa. Referenda werden afgeblazen op verzoek van de EU en top Goldman Sachs-bankiers werden tot premier gemaakt.

Een klein jaar na de studenten-revolte van 1973 is de Griekse bevolking erin geslaagd de militaire dictatuur omver te werpen. Vandaag strijdt de Griekse bevolking aan dezelfde kant met de Take the Square-beweging in Spanje, de Occupy-beweging in de VS, in Nederland en elders, de studenten-beweging in Chile en met de openbaar vervoer-stakers in Amsterdam. De economische dictatuur van de bankiers, de EU, de ECB en het IMF die ze willen implementeren in heel Europa kan omver geworpen worden met onze gezamenlijke strijd.

I want to convey a solidarity message from a group of Greek immigrants.
This week, the Greek people commemorated with mass protests the 38th anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic uprising against the military dictatorship.
Today, 38 years later, the Greek people are struggling against a new dictatorship: the dictatorship of the EU and the IMF.
While the Dutch media and politicians talk about lazy and corrupt Greeks who enjoy high wages and retire at 53, Greek people suffer from poverty, sky-high taxes, massive privatizations and repression.
In order to ensure the repayment of the state debt with usurer’s interest rates to the Germans, French and Dutch creditors, salaries and pensions have been reduced by 40%,
unemployment has risen to 18% (40% for young workers), the poor Greeks are threatened by losing their homes and public goods, such as public transport, education and
health care are given as a gift to the creditors.
The Dutch government tries to convince you that austerity measures are necessary so that the Netherlands does not become Greece.
The Rutte-government and the most opposition parties suggest that the workers, the unemployed and the students, must give up their rights and put their hands deep in their pockets in order to calm down the beast of the financial markets.
The truth is that Greece is not the exception but an experiment for Europe.
What started in Greece 1.5 years ago, starts now in Italy, Portugal, Spain and Ireland, and will also start soon in the Netherlands.
As shown by the latest developments, even democracy has no place in Europe anymore.
Referendums are cancelled at the request of the EU and top-bankers of Goldman Sachs become prime ministers.
As we were informed by our Spanish comrades, thousands of Spanish citizens living abroad will not be able to participate in today’s elections because the government didn’t sent them the required papers. Another example …

in less than a year after the students’ uprising of 1973, the Greek people managed to topple the military dictatorship.
Today, the Greek people are fighting side by side with the Take the Square movement in Spain the Occupy movement in the U.S., in the Netherlands and elsewhere, the students’ movement in Chile and the public transport strikers of Amsterdam.
The economic dictatorship of the banks, the EU, the ECB and the IMF that they want to impose all over Europe can be toppled by our joint struggle.
