Factory occupation and workers control in Thessaloniki, Greece – Discussion Event in Utrecht

It is already the 17th month that the factory “Viomichaniki Metalleutiki” in Thessaloniki, Greece, remains closed. The workers attempt an important struggle under difficult circumstances, to get the factory out of capital’s grasp and put it under workers control.

What difficulties do these workers encounter? How does direct democracy on the workfloor work? How to deal with the state and the company’s efforts to frustrate their struggle? Someone involved with the Open Solidarity Initiative, that support these workers, will tell about their struggle. There will also be a Skype conversation with one of the workers of this factory.

Het is alweer de 17e maand dat de fabriek “Viomichaniki Metalleutiki” in Thessaloniki, Griekenland, gesloten blijft. De arbeiders ondernemen een belangrijke strijd, onder moeilijke omstandigheden, om de fabriek uit de handen van het kapitaal te nemen en in de handen van de arbeiders te plaatsen.

Welke moeilijkeheden komen zij tegen? Hoe ziet directe democratie op de werkvloer eruit? Hoe om te gaan met pogingen van het moederbedrijf en de staat om hun strijd te ondermijnen? Iemand betrokken bij het Open Solidariteits Initiatief, die deze arbeiders ondersteunt, zal komen vertellen over hun strijd. Ook zal er een Skype verbinding zijn met een van de arbeiders van de fabriek.
